“In My House”
In My House explores domesticity and depth through the use of motifs and contact. It is a culmination of two strangers learning to live with one another over the course of 6 months. It is a dance theatre piece that invites viewers in for an intimate view between two no longer strangers. It seeks to challenge its audience members' subconscious and conscious conditioning measured by the assumptions they make in their mind. Is there pressure around stereotypical roles of domesticity and heteronormal assumptions? How does witnessing physical and intimate contact between members of the opposite sex alter your idea of a relationship? The dancers’ desire is for you to leave the assumptions at the door and take a seat on their couch to join the conversation. They want to bring the audience along to view the most honest parts of life; home life. They wish for the crowd to allow emotions and questions to flow and be content with not knowing the answers. It includes a set of items from our family history matched with soft lighting producing a warm and welcoming home. Its pillars of support are authenticity, adaptability, bravery, and vulnerability.
